Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner passed away on September 27, 2017 at the age of 91, however, his persona is expected to live on through Jared Leto.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Leto will be playing the silk robed icon in Brett Ratner’s upcoming biopic.
The project has been in the works for nearly 10 years, with the rights to Hefner’s story changing hands several times. Ratner purchased the rights for Hefner’s story after producer Jerry Weintraub (Ocean’s Eleven) died in 2015. The project was originally set to be done by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment and early rumors were that Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. would play Hefner. The rights to the film eventually expire and Weintraub purchased them.
Hefner founded Playboy Magazine in 1953 and it quickly became a success leading to a media empire.
Leto won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club. His most recent performances include The Joker in Suicide Squad and will also appear in the upcoming film Blade Runner 2049.
Ratner is known for directing films such as Rush Hour and Horrible Bosses. The Hugh Hefner biopic will be made by his production company, RatPac Entertainment.
